— Stephanie ArkadieProcrastination is not a failure to act, it's a symptom of living out of alignment with what truly matters.
Welcome to Season 2, Episode 5 of The Mind Your Business Mentor Podcast, our very first VIDEO episode! In this powerful and personal session, we're confronting a struggle that nearly every solopreneur experiences: procrastination. But not from the usual "you're just lazy" angle. We're digging deeper.
This episode unpacks why we really procrastinate and what it looks like to move forward with alignment, clarity, and purpose. Spoiler alert: it has a lot more to do with being out of sync with yourself than a lack of discipline.
From Pause to Purpose
I started this podcast with big goals and a fresh approach. I launched an AI-powered podcast with every intention of standing out and maximizing my content. But after four episodes, everything stopped. Not because I didn't care, but because I was waiting: for engagement, for feedback, for permission.
Then I had a conversation with my mentor David Shands. He didn't know any of this, but he looked me dead in the face and said:
— David ShandsYou need to do video.
That was my confirmation. That was my wake-up call. And that moment is the reason this episode exists in the format it does today.
What I want you to understand is that this isn't a story about waiting for someone else to give you permission. It's a story about recognizing a signal when it arrives and finally deciding to act on it. That moment with my mentor wasn't him giving me permission. It was the universe confirming what I already knew I needed to do. The real question is: what confirmation have you already received that you've been ignoring?
Why We Really Procrastinate
Let's get one thing clear right now. Procrastination is not about time management. It is not simply about laziness, weakness, or a lack of ambition. Those are the surface-level stories we tell ourselves and that others project onto us. The truth runs much deeper.
Procrastination is most often rooted in one or more of the following:
- Misalignment: You're pursuing something that doesn't truly resonate with who you are or what you value.
- Lack of clarity: You can't move forward when you're not sure where forward even is.
- Fear: Fear of failure, fear of success, and yes, fear of judgment from people who haven't taken the same risks you have.
- Perfectionism: Waiting until everything is perfect before you begin means you never begin at all.
- Constant comparison: Measuring your chapter one against someone else's chapter twenty.
- Lack of structure: Without a system or framework, ambition floats without landing anywhere.
- Not trusting yourself: This one is the deepest, and we'll come back to it.
When you understand what is actually causing your procrastination, you can address the real problem instead of beating yourself up over a symptom.
The 5D Philosophy: A Real-World Look
One of the frameworks I use to help entrepreneurs examine where they've gotten stuck is what I call the 5D Philosophy. Let's walk through each stage honestly.
- Decide: You chose to be an entrepreneur. That decision was yours. Own it.
- Discover: You found a business model that looked promising. You explored it.
- Develop: You started building, learning, and trying to make it work.
- Deliver: But this is where most people get stuck. They don't finish what they start. Delivery requires execution, and execution requires you to push through discomfort.
- Dominate: Mastering your goals and your space cannot happen until you have fully executed on all of the above. Domination is a result, not a starting point.
Most people cycle through Decide, Discover, and Develop repeatedly without ever reaching Deliver. They restart the loop. They take another course, consume another podcast episode, read another book. And all of that learning is valuable, but at some point the learning has to become doing.
The Flight Analogy
Imagine you're boarding a plane to New York. You're buckled in. You're ready. The engines fire up and the pilot begins rolling down the runway. But then the plane slows. Then stops. Then it rolls halfway down again and stops again.
You would never take off.
That is exactly how most people run their businesses. They get momentum, they stop. They start again, they stop. Constantly resetting without ever achieving liftoff.
And here's the other part of that analogy that matters: even when you do take off, flights never move in a perfectly straight line. Pilots are constantly making micro-corrections, adjusting for wind, for altitude, for changing conditions. They course correct in real time. You will too. That is not a sign of failure. That is the beauty of choosing alignment over perfection.
Progress over perfection is not a cliche. It is a survival strategy for entrepreneurs who want to actually arrive at their destination.
The Comparison Trap and the Permission You Already Took
Let's talk about comparison, because it is one of the most insidious forms of procrastination and the most socially acceptable one. We scroll through someone else's highlight reel and we measure our behind-the-scenes against their polished front stage. It is not a fair comparison. It was never meant to be.
Stop comparing your inconsistency to someone else's years of discipline. That person you're comparing yourself to? They showed up when they didn't feel like it. They published when they were scared. They delivered when the feedback was slow and the audience was small. You are looking at the output of a process, not the process itself.
And here's the thing about permission: you became an entrepreneur so you could stop asking for it. You made that declaration. You stepped outside of the traditional structure of employment and said, I am going to build something of my own. So why are you still waiting for someone to tell you it's okay to go?
You already took control. Now act like it.
Trust Yourself First
Everyone in the business and marketing space will tell you that you need to be known, liked, and trusted by your audience. And that's true. But here is the question that doesn't get asked nearly enough: do you know, like, and trust yourself?
That is where real confidence begins. Not in external validation. Not in follower counts or open rates or someone giving you a thumbs-up in the comments. Confidence is built through the relationship you have with yourself, through the promises you keep to yourself, through the moments you choose to show up even when no one is watching.
When you trust yourself, you stop waiting for someone else to tell you it's your time. You stop asking for confirmation from people who don't have your vision. You stop needing applause before you take the stage.
Building that self-trust is not a one-time event. It is a practice. It starts with small commitments kept. It grows with consistent action. And it expands into the kind of unshakable belief in yourself that no external circumstance can easily shake.
You Were Built to Move
You can't build on pause. That is not a motivational phrase. It is a practical truth. Every day that you stay stuck in the planning phase, the preparing phase, or the waiting-for-the-right-moment phase, is a day that someone who is less prepared but more committed is serving the audience you were meant to reach.
You were not designed to stay stuck. You were built to move, to build, and to deliver. The gifts, the perspective, the lived experience you carry, those belong in the world. They don't belong in a draft folder or a vision board that never gets acted on.
This episode is your invitation to do just that. If you needed a sign, if you were waiting for something to confirm that now is the time and you are the one to do it, consider this your sign. The timing is not perfect. It never will be. But you are ready enough, and ready enough is where momentum begins.
Stop procrastinating and Mind Your Business. Your life is your business, mind it well.
